2010年初夏，著名版画家应天齐先生给我打来电话，他为另一位版画家向我社索要刚刚出版的《春华秋实•1949-2009——新中国版画集》。我和他虽素未谋面，但对他的作品却十分熟悉，因此在电话里谈得甚是投缘，就像多年未见的老朋友。
应天齐先生的版画《西递村系列》，是中国现当代最重要的版画作品之一，那沉寂、苍凉、厚重以及深藏其中的神秘让人过目难忘。我社出版的《春华秋实•1949-2009——新中国版画集》中，理论家邹跃进、尚辉，版画家广军，对新中国版画六十年的进程进行过系统和深入的梳理。他们在论及新时期版画的发展时，探讨了应天齐对中国新兴版画从集体叙事到个体叙事的转型中所作出的重要贡献。
应天齐先生的油画《世纪遗痕》是近年完成的新作。创作始于2006年，至今已历五个年头。这些作品篇幅宏大、气韵深沉，我和理论家兼副社长黄啸曾亲临深圳，在应天齐的画室里观看了这些作品。我们未曾想到，他虽长年从事水印版画创作，但对油画创作也如此擅长和出色。他的作品《世纪遗痕》以材料、实物作为主要载体，将一种“实存”观念延伸于绘画。这一实存的遗痕，又一如既往地将画家对历史、文化、人生的诘问，在画面中以一种悲凉的情绪层层推进。画面或凹凸起伏，或平整无痕，或色彩浓烈，或淡墨素裹，在西方现代构成横平竖直的形式表象中，暗藏着中国数千年的文化积淀和艺术家自身独具的情感体验。面对作品，我们看到一个艺术家在浮躁、喧嚣的当下，虽有人类精神家园失落，但仍然表现出淡定、沉静和由此而产生的深邃思索，这是一个艺术家面对自己的社会责任所肩负的使命感。
对应天齐的艺术探索产生了很大影响的美国波普艺术之父劳森伯格曾经说过：“共享各自不同的特点，会使我们更加亲近。”而我们湖南美术出版社的职责，就是为杰出艺术家所创造的杰出艺术作品搭建一个平台，共享、传播并推出他们非凡的艺术成果，共同推进中国美术向前发展。
应天齐先生“世纪遗痕艺术展”将在北京中国美术馆举办，我社特聘请四川美术学院教授、理论家王林先生担任主编，陆续出版《应天齐世纪遗痕》画册、《当代艺术家个案研究——应天齐艺术文献》，以及《一个人的艺术世界——应天齐传记》等系列专著。希望以上工作能在一定程度上记录并反映中国美术发展的历程，能更好地促进中国美术在新时期的发展和繁荣。

In the early summer of 2010, the famous print artist Ying Tianqi called me, requesting our newly-published Vernal Flowers and Autumnal Fruits (1949-2009) A Collection of New China s Print Art for another print artist. Although I had never seen him, I was quitefamiliar with his art works, and so we talked over the phone like old friends who had met a long time before.
Mr. Ying Tianqi s Xidi Village Series is one of the most significant contemporary Chinese print art works---its deep sense of stillnss, desolation, substantiality and mystery concealed therein is really unforgettable for the audience. In our publication of Vernal Flowers and Autumnal Fruits (1979-2009) A Collection of New China s Print Art, theorists Zou Yue and Shang Hui together with the print artist Guang Jun give a systematic and in-depth account of the progress of print art over the past 60 years in New China. In discussing the development of print art in the new era, they study Ying Tianqi s remarkable contribution to the transition of China s new print art form from collective to individual narratives.
Mr. Ying s oil painting collection Traces of Centuries was completed this year, which was started 5 years ago in 2006. These works of art are vast in measure and profound in spirit, which were displayed in his studio to me and Huang Xiao, art theorist and vice president of our publishing house who accompanied me to Shenzhen. It was really a surprise to us that Mr. Ying is no less of a master of oil painting than printing despite his persistent work on watermark printing for so many years. Mainly conveyed by materials and substances, his Traces of Centuries extends the concept of solid existence to paintings. With the painter s customary interrogation of history, culture and human life, these traces of solid existence are advanced in his painting layer by layer in a mood of desolation. These works, either uneven in a texture or traceless on a plane, intense in colour or light in ink, conceal the millennial deposits of Chinese culture as well as the artist s emotional experience of personal life, yet all presented in the western parameter of horizontals and verticals. In front of them, we sense the composure and detachment of an artist with his corresponding meditation in this agitated modern world--- all due to an artist s missionary sense of social responsibility despite the fall of spiritual Eden in modern society. Sharing our different features will get us closer, said Rauschenberg, father of American pop art, who once had a significant effect on Ying s art exploration. And it is our Hunan Art Publishing House s duty to establish a platform for those brilliant artists so that their outstanding works of art can be shared and disseminated, thus effectively promoting the progress of Chinese Art.
Mr. Ying s Art Exhibition: Traces of Centuries is to be displayed in Beijing Chinese Art Gallery, and we have engaged Mr. Wang Lin, professor and theorist in Sichuan Art College as chief editor in publishing a series of books concerning Ying : an art album Ying Tianqi---Traces of Centuries, studies on his art like Art Literature of Ying Tianqi---A Case Study of Contemporary Artists, and his biographies like A Man s World of Art. Hopefully such works will more or less record and reflect the progress of Chinese art, thus stimulating her blossoming in the new era.
